Everyone thinks they know New York because they’ve seen it in a hundred movies and TV shows. But first time visitors often admit that they weren’t prepared for the scale and pace of the city. There are people everywhere, the noise is non-stop and the subway map is ridiculously confusing at first glance. But once they take a moment to step back and make sense of the madness, they begin to appreciate the city. Since we now live in the digital age, AlleyWatch put together a list of apps that we think will help you to enjoy our favorite city better.
Embark NYC – Embark NYC is a newer, more modern looking Hopstop, with a few more features. Designed to be your all-purpose transit app, Embark shows you a total breakdown of your journey from start to finish, including all required modes of public transport. Regular notifications on subway and bus delays and closings, and the ability to use the app underground without an available cell phone network makes it indispensible for your first month or so in the city. In addition to the New York MTA lines, the app also covers the NJ Transit, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North trains. There are similar local editions for Boston, Chicago, Washington and San Francisco.
Bandsintown – If you’re a music fan, then you’re in for a treat in New York. Home to some of the most iconic venues in the world, the city is a pit stop on every major and minor performing artist’s concert tour. And there are a lot of performers out there to keep track of. Bandsintown helps with that. The app allows you to track the touring schedule of your favorite artists, along with listing of all concerts in the city. You can integrate your Spotify, Pandora and other online streaming music service playlists, buy tickets to shows and share everything on Twitter and Facebook. If you’re interested in free gigs or the chance to win tickets to sold-out concerts or television tapings of performances, follow I Love Free Concerts for the latest happenings.
NYCTruckFood – As the name suggests, this app helps you locate the hundreds of insanely good food trucks roaming around the city all day, every day. You can search by what’s nearest to you, a particular cuisine, saved favorites or staff picks. The new version lets users rate and reviews trucks, too. For a city with new food trucks popping up almost every day, this is one useful app. Bon appetite!
Field Trip – Field Trip is Google’s attempt at entering the explore-your-city-with-your-phone app market. The Android app allows you to select interests under topics like Architecture, Lifestyle, Historic Places and Food, Drinks & Fun. Since the app runs in the background, it uses your phone’s GPS to notify you of interesting things around you, whether it is a Zagat-recommended restaurant, a local band featured on Songkick or a new store that Cool Hunting thinks you should visit. You can also mark your own favorites, so that you can keep coming back to it and share them through social media.
Now get out there and enjoy this city so nice, we named it twice.
